What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that we place over the entire portion of a tooth that protrudes above the gumline. Crowns are often used when:

• A tooth is broken or has large spots of decay.
• A tooth has undergone root canal therapy.
• A tooth is badly misshapen, worn-down, or weak.

Crowns are custom-made, so they fit in harmoniously with each patient’s unique bite. They can be made out of various materials, such as metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and 100% porcelain. In our Willow Grove practice, we favor lifelike tooth-colored materials that are almost indistinguishable from natural tooth enamel.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The dental crown process typically requires at least two appointments. During your initial visit, we will numb your tooth and then prepare it to receive your crown. Often, this involves removing some of its enamel. Then, we will take detailed impressions of your mouth before placing a temporary crown to protect your modified tooth.

A highly skilled laboratory technician will work to create your permanent, custom crown. Once it gets sent back to our office, we will double-check to make sure that it meets our rigorous quality standards before we place it on your tooth.
