If you have misalignment issues, you don’t need to opt for a mouthful of metal brackets and wires to get the straighter smile you’ve been dreaming of. Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners to slowly shift the teeth to their new, rightful locations. Continue reading to learn about the step-by-step process of Invisalign so you will know exactly what you can expect.

Consultation

The first step of the Invisalign process is your initial consultation. At this time, it is determined whether or not you are an ideal candidate for the treatment. Invisalign can be used to address a wide range of orthodontic issues, but there are still some that are too complex, so they require the help of traditional braces. During this consultation, you will be able to confirm that Invisalign is the right choice for you.

Preparing

To prepare for your treatment, X-rays are taken of your teeth, and a model of your smile is created. This is used so your orthodontist can craft a customized treatment plan to meet your needs.

Receiving Your Aligners

After a few weeks, your aligners will be ready! Some small adjustments may be made, like adding buttons to your teeth. These small, tooth-colored bumps are made from cosmetic resin and placed on the front-facing surfaces of some of the teeth. Their purpose is to keep the aligners in place and allow for the perfect amount of pressure to be put on specific teeth.

Follow-Up Visits

You will need to return to the dental office regularly to make sure that your teeth move as planned. Even with a detailed plan, your teeth can still move unexpectedly. It’s important to catch issues like that right away so adjustments can be made to keep your smile on track with your treatment plans/

Refinements

Once your series of aligners is complete, your dentist will examine your smile to see if you need any refinement. If you do, you will receive some additional trays to make some finishing adjustments. This way, you and your orthodontist can ensure that you are satisfied with your final results.

Retainers

Lastly, all the buttons are removed, and your clear aligners will be switched out for a retainer. This looks just like your Invisalign trays that you are used to, but its purpose is to prevent your teeth from moving back to their original locations.

Metal braces are great at addressing misalignment, but Invisalign can also give you a more discreet, comfortable treatment. You’ll be showing off a straighter smile in just a matter of time!
