Beware of These 4 Summer Activities That Can Damage Your Smile

From days spent by the pool to nights gathered around the bonfire, the summer sun brings about a number of fun activities. Sadly, however, many of them can wreak havoc on your teeth and gums, leading to tooth decay and cavities come fall. The good news is that by avoiding a few dangerous habits, you can enjoy the warmer weather and protect your smile at the same time!

#1. Consuming Too Much Sugar

Ice-cold, refreshing sodas and delicious, creamy ice cream are just a few popular summer goodies. However, it is important to remember that although your tastebuds may love treats like these, your teeth and gums certainly do not. Once the sugar hits your mouth, it turns into an enamel-eroding acid, significantly increasing your risk of tooth decay and cavities. Therefore, you should exercise moderation when it comes to sugar.

#2. Spending Time in the Sun Unprotected

When the temperature warms up and the sun is out, it’s oh-so-tempting to spend the whole day outside. Although getting much-needed Vitamin D is important, you should wear SPF on your skin and lips while doing so. After all, too much time in the sun unprotected is one of the culprits of oral cancer, which can be disastrous for your oral and overall health.

#3. Not Wearing a Mouthguard During Summer Sports

While playing a pickup game of football or volleyball, you might not think wearing a mouthguard is necessary. However, all it takes is one bad fall or accidental elbow to your face for your pleasant afternoon at the park to turn into an anxiety-inducing dental emergency. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so make sure to ask your dentist about a custom mouthguard if you play any contact or non-contact sports this time of year.

#4. Neglecting Your Oral Hygiene Routine

For many people, their solid oral hygiene routine is the first thing to go when their schedule gets more relaxed, especially on vacation. If you don’t want your summer fun to result in fall cavities, then make sure to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and use mouthwash frequently. You should also schedule your six-month dental checkup and cleaning if you haven’t already!

Summer is a time to relax, hang out with family and friends, and enjoy some fun in the sun. Just keep the above information in mind to ensure your oral health isn’t compromised in the process!
